Netflix is a streaming service that offers a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, anime, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.
Back in 2015 the hashtag “Netflix and Chill” was trending on social media, and it was the perfect opportunity to show the world that the company was in on the action. My team and I decided to create a spec commercial that took advantage of all the organic traffic social media had given the hashtag.
Our spot takes inspiration from other ads, like Airbnb’s 2015 “Is Mankind?” commercial. The audience follows a baby walking towards a glass door as we hear a voice-over about how the company helps people belong anywhere.
In a dark room, a couple sits on the couch with a gap in between them. The man flips through channels trying to find something to watch. There’s nothing but tedious cable programming. They’re both bored out of their minds. Finally, we are introduced to Netflix. We end up with the couple cuddling together as the camera loses focus and the Netflix logo comes in.
The project stuck with its original production plan. Although the script had been written with a voice-over in mind, when it reached post-production, it was decided by the team that the voice-over would be redundant as most of us agreed that the message got across perfectly without it.
